Antarctic region marine observations for 1895-1915
Porquoi-Pas 1908-10
Data from The second French Antarctic Expedition 1908-10 were available from the book ""Observations meteorologiques. Deuxieme Expeditions Antarctica Francais 1908-10. Sciences., Physiques Documents Sciences (1914), by J. Rouch.".
- Data was digitised in three batches:
- The voyage from France to Cape Horn in 1908 and the return in 1910(Excel spreadsheet,Tab delimited text)) - converted to IMMA with this script.
- The voyage from Cape Horn to Antarctica in 1908-10 (Excel spreadsheet,Tab delimited text)) - converted to IMMA with this script.
- The winter of 1909 spent frozen in at Petermann Island (Excel spreadsheet,Tab delimited text)) - converted to IMMA with this script.
- The voyage logs contain more weather observations than position records, so positions for some obs are generated using linear interpolation by this script.
- The observations from the three batches were merged into date order using this script.
- IMMA records.
Problems and limitations
- At least some data from this expedition have been previously digitised and are in ICOADS 2.3.
- It is not clear how ship's time relates to GMT (what time-zone were they keeping on board)? The observation times have been converted to GMT assuming a time zone based on the exact longitude of the observation.
